Civil engineers must improve productivity if they are to fight the challenges facing society today, said incoming ICE President Ed McCann in his inaugural address.

At the live-streamed inauguration event in November, McCann discussed how improving productivity and efficiency in construction can help efforts to tackle climate change.

In a film entitled “How to thrive in the 21st century”, McCann said that recent studies show that the industry is often extremely wasteful in terms of money, human capital, materials, tools, machinery, time, energy, social capital, land, ecosystems, as well as information and data.

He said high rework and error rates in design and construction are typical, with between 10% and 25% of average UK construction project costs associated with avoidable error.

Cutting out waste would allow engineers to start addressing the climate change issue, he said.

In the film, McCann challenges civil engineers to improve the way in which they design, build and operate infrastructure.

He said this would require a relentless focus on everything engineers do. And he challenged the industry to improve.

During his presidential year, McCann will work with eight of the brightest and most motivated ICE graduate and technician members.

These President’s Future Leaders have a unique opportunity to gain experience, develop skills and learn about the industry working with ICE staff and with the President.

This year’s Future Leaders are: London Bridge Associates engineer Asil Zaidi; Mott MacDonald graduate civil engineer Emma Zikun Wei; Cowi UK graduate tunnelling engineer  Karina Augustine; Robert Bird Group design engineer Kristina Dahyaraj; Story Contracting graduate engineer Lara Lightfoot; SNC Lavalin Atkins structural engineer Panagiotis Stratos; Morgan Sindall temporary works co-ordinator Peter Simmons; and Buro Happold structural engineer Rhona Kerr.
